Instead, Ella, Kale and Jace look for the mysterious Zdrowy, a group of Chorý thought have been cured of la Luxure.
Kale used to be convinced that the Chorý race was nothing but monsters, but do they all deserve to be exterminated? The question plagues Kale as he and Ella search for the mythical group of cured Chorý.
In the final installment of the Few Are Angels series, Ella and Kale are set on a path that not only leads to a cure to the Chorý status, but may offer Kale what he has been chasing his entire immortal life: absolution.
Excerpt-
The idea
of speaking to Yuri made Kale nervous, even after I reaffirmed my vision had
proved his innocence in connection to the death of my parents. I understood his
worry, yet I was unable to soothe it. It seemed Kale would just walk around
untrusting of anyone in the Council and I understood that, too. I didn’t try to
mollify his nervousness. Yuri would have to earn his trust.
In the West Wing of the Council sat Yuri’s chem
lab and his living quarters. As Jace told it, years ago the lab swam with
scientists and researchers whose main goal was to keep up with the scientific
qualities of being an immortal. What that meant, I wasn’t too sure, but Jace
didn’t elaborate on it.
Kale and I sat together in Yuri’s lab, on a
ratty ol’ loveseat that looked as if it was used for a bed on long work nights.
The bags under Yuri’s eyes confirmed my suspicions. Often I caught him staring
at me. Sad, yet kind eyes bore right into my soul. He no doubt felt pity for me.
Something told me Yuri was a kindhearted man, which only fueled my desire to
work with him.
Jace and Sola sat in student style desks beside
us as Yuri examined the medical journal.
Caressing the cover, he opened the
book and read the library placement card. “The date’s state sixteen sixty-six, and
the drawing of crude instruments and old formulas tell that as well. Still, I
must question the authenticity of this.” His brow furrowed and he shuffled from
foot to foot.
“Why?” I leaned forward. “Do you see
something in there that makes you think it was fake?” The book looked real to
me, but I wasn’t the professional.
Yuri shook his head, his graying
bushy hair fluttered in the wind he created. “No, on the contrary. A lot of the
findings in the journal are true. The hitch is that it fell into your friend’s
hands here.” He pointed to Sola who looked to all of us with an I-didn’t-do-it
look on her face. I almost laughed. “And now it is here, in the Council of all
places . . .” His voice trailed off as he stood and ambled around the desk.
His lab was quite unconventional. No beakers,
steaming potions, or even lab equipment. I glanced around looking at the almost
barren room.
Yuri caught my eye. “Aleixandre has
stopped all production.” I peeked up at him confused at his confession. “You
seemed curious and I assume my lab is in question.” I nodded. “Once you were found,
my methods for searching were no longer needed.”
“What method actually worked?” Sola
asked.
“Not one we’d ever want to repeat,”
Jace said grimly.
From the look on her face, Sola’s interest was
obviously piqued, but she didn’t question any further. Thank goodness.
“Who gave this to you?” Yuri asked
facing Sola.
She came forward and took the book.
“Caron, in the lab back at Cambridge.”
“Hmm . . . And you say that she—”
“He,
Caron is a he,” she interrupted. “He gave it to me . . .” Her face crumpled as
if she were hard in thought. “Well, actually, he and I found it in the library
when we were working together and we used it for the research.”
Yuri’s eyes narrowed as he scratched his
stubbled jaw.
“Not too long after that, I was thrown on a
plane and brought here. I mean, the paper was never completed,” she grumbled.
“So much for my perfect GPA.”
Yuri picked up the desk phone and
placed it to his ear, finger poised over the buttons. “And this Caron, has he
tried to contact you since you left school? Perhaps to ask where you
disappeared to or how you are doing? I would assume that you two became rather
close if you worked together daily.” A bushy eyebrow rose with his question.
Jace pushed away from the wall. “You
two aren’t dating, are you?” A blush
covered his face as soon as all eyes were on him. “What?” He shoved his fingers
through his blond hair, feigning bravado I was sure he didn’t feel. “It was
just a question.” His blushing made me chuckle and his interest in Sola is
probably what put a frown on Kale’s face.
Sola’s eyes widened and her lips
pursed as she addressed Yuri. “As a matter of fact, no. And that’s odd, seeing as how we worked together every day.”
“Every day! What the hell kind of
school is this?” Jace’s brow shot well past his forehead, his voice echoing
throughout the room.
Had I ever pointed out that his accent is
thicker when he was angry? I chuckled louder this time.
“Umm . . . college?” Sola bit her
lip and smiled. I wasn’t sure if she knew Jace’s attraction to her or not, but
it was seriously hilarious to me. “We worked on this a lot.” She reached into
her pocket. “I’ll call him right now.”
She paused when Yuri said, “No need,
Sola. What is his first and last name?”
“Caron Rodgers, I think? I just know his badge
said Caron R—something.”
Yuri
spoke into the phone. “Zed, I’ll need you to discreetly check someone out for
me if you aren’t too busy.”
While he filled this Zed in, I turned to Jace
and mouthed, “Zed?”
“He is the tech wizard here,” he
whispered back. “Think Penelope Garcia and SSA
Reid from Criminal Minds all wrapped into one quirky, yet oddly awkward ball of
genius.”
“Right now, that guy sounds all
kinds of awesome,” I replied. “I could use some quirkiness in my life.”
